Nukulou Island
Nukulou islet, off the East coast of Suva, has a rich history. It was purchased by Consul Brown Williams. It became famous after George Speight, the perpetrator responsible for causing the coup which overthrew Fiji’ first Indian Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhary and the Civilian Government in the year 2000. Speight and his party were imprisoned there till 2006, until the current Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama announced that the prison should be closed and the island be converted to a public place.
