Going to the movies is a favourite pastime of locals and in comparison to western countries it is an extremely economic form of entertainment. A visit to the movies in western countries will cost around A$20. Similarly to that, in Fiji you will be able to buy tickets and munchies for a family of 4 and at times even squeeze in two or three more movies for the same price.
Generally there are 2-3 Bollywood movies being featured daily. Hindi movies are becoming popular with tourists as most of them have subtitles. These movies are mostly based on dancing and slapstick comedy. Some people claim that actors such as Amitabh Bachan and Shahrukh Khan are every bit as good as George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
The best part of watching movies in Fiji is that they feature new releases well before they are released in other countries enabling you to see your favorites first. Movies accompanied by lots of hype and promotions have special premier nights accompanied by a cocktail party with proceeds usually going to charity. Cinemas are always filled to capacity during the weekends as families, friends and couples spend their free time together.
Damodar brothers, who are the owners of Village Cinemas are constructing their latest cinema complex in Laucala Bay, close to the University of the South Pacific. This huge complex will be the second cinema complex in Suva and will also feature retail outlets and dining facilities.
