Tennis
The sport of tennis is also popular in the region. There are several tennis clubs in and around Suva that are usually busy with club games, coaching or individuals having a hit. Suva Lawn Tennis Club provides all its members with the benefits of a well managed run club. Social events are also an integral part of the club’s activities.
Lawn Bowls
Lawn Bowls is very popular in Suva with both younger and older players involved. Suva Lawn Bowling Club has a magnificent facility set right next to the ocean. The club restaurant is extremely popular with spectacular meals at budget prices available for members and non-members alike.
Canoeing/Kayaking
Canoeing and or kayaking is a favorite, not only with locals, but particularly so with our visitors. This experience is available via the various resorts and associated activity outlets. Our warm, calm ocean waters offer the opportunity for a relaxed experience while cruising past small islands, cool down as you take a break snorkeling or picnicking at a small inlet under a shady tree.
Hiking
Suva environs is a perfect place for hiking. There are rainforest tracks, island tracks and mountain tracks. The Suva Rucksack Club holds regular organized walks, hikes and camping trips for enthusiasts providing not only an opportunity to hike in the knowledge that you are in capable hands but also gives the opportunity to meet locals who enjoy similar pursuits. Swimming
Suva’s tropical climate is definitely an incentive to go for a dip. There are 3 public swimming pools around Suva and these are the Suva Olympic Pool located at Victoria Parade City Centre, the Aquatic Center located at Laucala Bay and the USP Pool which is also located in Laucala Bay in the University campus grounds.
The pools all possess the basic facilities with safety lockers for your valuables and swim instructors for those wishing to take swimming lessons.
Surfing
Fiji Islands offers surfers the opportunity to surf world class waves. In 2010, the Government of Fiji passed a “Surfing Decree” that broke up the monopoly of resorts controlling access to world famous waves such as ‘Swimming Pools’, ‘Restaurants’, ‘Tavarua’ and the world renowned ‘Cloud Break’.
In June, 2012 surfers from all over the world gathered at Tavarua to take part in the famous Volcom Fiji Pro Surfing competition. Overall, Kelly Slater from USA walked away with first prize with runner-up, Gabriel Medina from Brazil. And for those who can’t make it to the outer islands, Suva has a surf-break near Suva lighthouse.
Horseback Riding
Horseback riding by locals has been a popular mode of transport forever. Numerous resorts offer horseback riding on the western side of Fiji but closer to Suva, you will find many villages along the way looking to earn a few extra dollars by offering you a ride on one of their many horses. The livery is not fancy but adequate for the purpose.
Pacific Harbour has organized horse-riding treks with resorts offering treks that take you off the beaten track into virgin wilderness.
Golf
Golf is also becoming a fast growing sport for the people in Fiji. The Fiji Golf Club (FGC), located five minutes from the city is one of the many golf courses around Fiji. The course occupies more than a hundred acres of prime real estate land. The FGC is the largest golf club in Fiji with membership and practice facilities available for interested advocates.
Vijay Singh, Fiji’s professional golfer who was ranked world number 1 for 32 weeks in 2004 and 2005 hails from Nadi. His hometown, Nadi, has already become a Mecca for professional and leisure golfers with individual and club groups attracted by the fabulous 18-hole course at Denarau, the site of many 5-star resorts. Pacific Harbour, around 20 minutes out of Suva also has an 18-hole, par 72 championship course
